In 1955, in the middle of a military dictatorship, a teenage girl seduces her brother and due to their incestous relationship the lovers are possessed by the ghosts of their ancestors. The two youngsters become vampirical and criminal creatures like those created by the colombian "violencia", mingling with the mythological beings of the countryside like "drafts" and other ghost sowing fear into the heart of men. Directed by Carlos Mayolo. Centers on a wealthy family fighting over the last testament of a just-deceased matriarch. From there, the family members are shown to have an incestuous relationship, and eventually vampires come into the picture, as well as unbridled slaughter. Tropical Gothic Baroque. An extremely interesting film about La Violencia in Colombia which captures the strange social and political heterogeneity of this dark set of events. Mayolo developed his own aesthetic - partly in collaboration with filmmaker Luis Ospina and the late Andrés Caicedo - 'el gótico tropical' in order to convey this strangeness. The film combines local Colombian myths - caspi, la madremonte, el hojarasquin del monte - with themes of vampirism and incest to convey the place of La Violencia within a repetitive and cyclical history characterised by interpartisan conflicts that benefit the empowerment of the Colombian aristocracy.

THE TIES THAT BIND is an experimental documentary about the filmmaker's mother, who was born and lived in southern Germany from 1920-1950. Through a mixture of personal anecdote and social history, she describes the rise of Nazism, the war years, and the Allied occupation, during which she met her future husband, an American soldier. The only voice we hear is that of this one "ordinary woman", while the images portray her current life in Chicago, her hometown before and during the war, New York Post headlines, contemporary peace marches, present day footage of Germany and much more. However, THE TIES THAT BIND breaks with the usual format of war documentaries, thus allowing a different portrait of the individual to emerge, while it reflects on the current political situation in America and the filmmaker's activities in relation to those issues. The film creates a powerful dialogue between past and present, between mother and daughter. But it is more than an interview of a mother by a daughter; it is a profound search for a definition of history, and a challenge to our own responsibility for the present.

Wing Sum, a little girl frequently neglected by her mother, is sent to her grandmother's mansion for a temporary stay on a stormy night. There begins a series of queer events. First there is a power outage, then her grandmother reveals her most well kept secret: she is a cannibal all along, and tonight she is having her grand daughter for dinner. Chased by a maniacal cannibal in her own territory, there is seemingly no escape for Wing Sum. She is however miraculously rescued by the queerest turn of events.
