It was not created until the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. As of 2008, one Albanian film, Caucasia, has been submitted for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee.

The film was based on Eliso (its origina l release title), a novel by fellow-writer Georgian A. Karbek. The story, founded on an ancient romantic legend, is set amongst the Caucasian tribes of the Tersk region. Few of the cast members were professionals, requiring Shangalaya to virtually spoon-feed his direction. As a result, the acting in the film is not quite as compelling as the spontaneous scenes of Caucasian customs and celebrations.
