Byeong-yeon (Park Gyeong-ju), a grandson of Kim Ik-sun, once the deputy delegate of Seoncheon, wins the first place in the state examination. He is refused a government position, because his grandfather gave in at the revolution of Hong Gyeong-rae (Kim Seung-ho). Disappointed, Byeong-yeon leaves his family to lead a bohemian life, wearing a reed hat and holding a bamboo stick. He leaves novel poems behind in which he laments and ridicules a corrupted world. The sentences are full of satire and humor. He meets No-dam (Kim Dong-won) and goes to Gagadang, Ga-mae's (Hwang Jeong-sun) house, where scholars get together and recite poems. He settles there and opens a private school. He falls in love with Ga-ryeon, a daughter of Ga-mae. But when he realizes Ga-ryeon's father is Hong Gyeong-rae, he is in deep anguish. Hyang-a (Lee Young-ok), who has a crush on Byoeng-yeon, is Eok-man's wife, but as her husband is impotent she is not satisfied with him. Byeong-yeon accepts her attentions, but when he realizes Eok-man loves her in earnest, he leaves the town. Out of love for Byeong-yeon, Ga-ryeon becomes a Buddhist nun and Byoeng-yeon dies on a road.
