Seol-ah (18) works at the Afterlife Photo Studio, where the dead come to take one final photograph before moving on. One day, while developing the portrait of a girl named Na-ye (16), she discovers the print has turned completely black. Nothing in the manual explains it. She brings it to her supervisor Jeo-cha (19), who shows her Na-ye's past. Na-ye was taken by Japanese forces during the colonial period. Her life was stolen from her, and she spent the rest of it in pain. Though she died long ago, history never acknowledged her — leaving her caught between worlds, unable to truly pass on. Seeing Na-ye's past, Seol-ah is also confronted with her own: the memory of a friend, Su-ha (18), who was bullied — and whom Seol-ah silently ignored. Consumed by guilt, she makes a decision. She will not make Na-ye wait any longer. She burns the afterlife manual and breaks the rules, sending Na-ye through to paradise. Na-ye thanks her and steps through the gate. Seol-ah goes to find Su-ha and apologize. Then she returns to the studio and gets back to work — taking last photographs, one after another. If a print comes out black now, she no longer hesitates. And so, she remains at the studio.

서울에서 방송작가로 일하던 수연은 한때 ‘뇌섹남’을 꿈꾸며 수많은 맞선을 보지만 모두 기대에 미치지 못한다. 회사에서는 학벌로 인해 프로그램에서 배제되고, 연인은 어린 여자와 바람을 피운 후 오히려 수연을 비난한다. 39세가 된 그녀는 마지막 자존감마저 바닥난 채 고향 진도로 돌아온다. 진도에 내려온 수연은 어린 시절 친구들이 반겨주는 따뜻함 속에서 잠시 마음을 놓는다. 그러다 시장에서 우연히 만난 준호는 더 성숙하고 따뜻한 모습으로 수연에게 다가온다. 친구들과의 술자리, 바닷가 산책, 진도 대파빵집에서의 소소한 행복은 수연의 굳은 마음을 조금씩 녹인다. 어느 날 밤, 수연의 집에서 이상한 소리가 들리고 공포에 질린 그녀를 준호가 도와준다. 알고 보니 그 소리는 길을 잃은 진돗개 새끼 때문이었고, 준호는 다친 손도 신경 쓰지 않은 채 강아지를 구해왔다. 그 순간 수연의 마음은 더욱 흔들린다. 한편 서울의 PD가 내려와 작품을 논의하기로 하자 준호는 두 사람이 잘되는 줄 알고 좌절한다. 하지만 그것은 단순한 업무 미팅이었고, 수연은 오해도 모른 채 준호를 걱정한다. 수연은 준호와 함께 진도의 풍경 속에서 점점 잊고 지냈던 감정—서로를 바라보는 따뜻한 시선, 말하지 않아도 전해지는 마음—을 되찾는다. 준호 역시 수연에게 말하지 못했던 마음을 단단히 품게 된다. 도시의 조건과 기준에 갇혀 살았던 수연은 고향, 그리고 준호와의 시간을 통해 “행복은 누구를 만나느냐보다, 어떤 마음으로 살고 있느냐”에 달려 있음을 깨닫는다. 서로 엇갈리고 다시 마주하는 순간들 속에서, 두 사람은 잔잔하지만 깊은 사랑의 가능성을 발견하게 된다.
