Set during the last days of the civil war that followed the Russian Revolution. The Crimea Peninsula is the last stronghold of the White Guard, and the Red Army is planning the final assault. The first story line of the movie follows two Red Army soldiers: unlikely friends Nekrasov and Karyakin. The second story line is about a White Guard officer Brusentsov who is devoted to Russia and his cause but sees it being destroyed day by day.

Ilan, an adolescent boy who lives in a farming community, is in constant clash with his father. He accidentally finds a stack of letters in the house attic, letters from his sister Dalya, that never reached him. Through these letters he learns the story of his sister's disappearance, and some facts about his life and his deceased mother. 　　He decides to run away to his sister. A complex relationship develops between the two. Ilan gets closer and closer to his sister's eccentric neighbor. The neighbor, an aging communist with a grand military past, runs, with Ilan's help, a battle against the authorities. 　　The story starts as a conventional adolescent drama but quickly turns into a fascinating and unexpected maturing journey.

Matthias Schüpbach’s Searching for the 5th Direction is a journey into the depths of the self that takes us across the blurred border of the outside world and through dark inner worlds. We float through virtually reconstructed spaces, and as we ascend through a landscape of autumn leaves we witness the first “glitches” in our reality, subtly pointing to the brittleness of our perception. The narrative oscillates between tangible reality and elusive revery.

律子（檀富美 配音）自幼就患有肢体障碍，无法像正常的孩子那样灵活的跑跑跳跳，她直到四岁才学会如何走路。这样的律子，在升上了小学之后，免不了遭受同学们异样的眼光，甚至还有人因为她先天的残疾而无情的嘲笑她。虽然对此感到非常的伤心，但是坚强的律子还是保持了她善良乐观的个性。 　　这一切多亏了律子的主治医生石桥（野口五郎 配音），石桥医生不仅在身体方面给律子提供了很多的帮助，还一直支持着她的精神世界，抚慰律子被流言中伤的内心。在石桥医生的鼓励下，律子决定参加接力跑。虽然对于律子来说，这是个了不起的决定，但是，和律子一起参加接力跑的同学们却并不能理解律子的选择。
