秀作「風の又三郎」を監督した島耕二が、宮澤賢治に続いて下村湖人の名作に挑んだ作品。村の旧家に生まれた次郎という少年が波乱に富んだ生活の中で大人へと成長していく過程を描く。館岡謙之助の脚本が原作をうまくまとめており、島耕二の演出も手堅く清らかな作品である。マンドリンを生かした伴奏音楽が斬新な効果を出している。

前作『結婚物語』のキャストが引き続き出演している。 　　なお、第1話は陽子と正彦の新婚旅行という設定でマレーシアロケを敢行し、21:00～22:24の拡大放送だった。

当時のテレビドラマでは珍しく、結婚にまつわるデータや各儀式の説明などがテロップで本編中に流れた。 　　テレビドラマ版では、陽子の妹・粒子は、弟・粒太（りゅうた）となっている。また、大島正彦の愛称は「ま〜さん」となっている。
