This is the first murder mystery based on the details of a real crime. It first appeared in Snowden's Ladies' Companion in three installments, November and December 1842 and February 1843.Detective C. Auguste Dupin uses his superior deductive skills to discover the identity of the murderer when the body of Marie Rogêt is found in the Seine River. "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt" is based in part on the actual murder of Mary Cecilia Rogers in New York in the mid-nineteenth century, and is believed to be the first example of real-life crime used as a foundation for fictional narrative. Poe is pioneer of the short story genre, his stories typically captured themes of the macabre and included elements of the mysterious.
