In this "inside look" at French filmmaking, Marechal - who is a has-been director - a producer, Vito Catene and Camile Dor, a big-name actress, have agreed to make a film about drugs, but don't have a story, financing, or any of the other elements needed to make it. This doesn't stop them; they cobble together the financing and begin shooting anyway. The producer is very fond of the leading actress, and when she gets hooked on drugs for real in the course of shooting what he feels to be a farcical imitation of a film, he gives up his shares in the film and heads off for the back of beyond (Zanzibar) to lick his wounds. To add insult to injury, the film winds up being a critical and commercial success.

Suffering from a terrible drought,an African tribe called the Galana decide to move to Mombasa.With there being little money around,some of the Galana decide to work for an underground gangster,by killing the local elephants,and taking their Ivory. Catching some of the Galana in their latest Ivory hunt,games warden (and friend of the Galana tribe) Bob Payton gets set to take them to the police. Talking to the tribal leader,Payton discovers that the young Galana's are working for a major gangster, which leads to Payton deciding that he will not take the Galana's in,and instead go after the big game.

West of Zanzibar is a 1928 film directed by Tod Browning about the vengefulness of a cuckolded magician (Lon Chaney) paralyzed in a brawl with his rival (Lionel Barrymore). The supporting cast includes Mary Nolan and Warner Baxter. It is based on a 1926 Broadway play called Kongo starring Walter Huston. Huston starred in the 1932 talkie film adaptation of the same story using the Kongo title. West of Zanzibar is also famous with horror film fans for having lost or excised sequences that Browning filmed. Namely Phroso(Chaney) as a duckman in a sideshow act and scenes showing Phroso and his troupe when they first arrive in Africa where the majority of the story takes place.
