故事始于1978年，电影放映员陈福生（滕汝骏 饰）有个儿子叫陈焕（许亚军 饰）。干部林汉民（韩小磊 饰）是陈福生的邻居，他女儿林平平（原华 饰）和陈焕是从小一起长大的青梅竹马。“文革”期间，林汉民蒙冤受罚，品学兼优的林平平也因父亲的政治问题与理想大学失之交臂，而陈焕则被师范大学录取，两人关系逐渐疏远。 后来，林汉民的冤屈得以平反，林平平进入北京大学深造，她和陈焕之间的缘分也面临着各种考验。时光如流水般悄然逝去，在时代的车轮飞速转动之际，陈家和林家这些小人物的命运被裹挟其中，不断前行。
