1939年，抗日战争进入艰难的相持阶段，日寇的侵略步伐在湖南战场受到阻碍，湖南成为抗日战争正面战场的最前线。1945年，日寇进犯湖南西部，中国人民抗日战争中的最后一次会战——“湘西会战”在湖南西部打响。狂妄的日军一路烧杀抢掠，最终抵达湖南西部的怀化芷江，妄图夺取芷江空军基地，然而遭到英勇的湘西人民顽强抵抗。 这场残酷的战争从4月9日持续至6月7日，双方伤亡总数达5万多人，损失巨大。作为致使日军最终投降的“最后一战”，“湘西会战”无疑是中华民族抗日战争史上浓墨重彩的一笔，它给予日本致命打击，最终以湘西人民的胜利而告终。
