「上山」是知名文藝片導演陳耀圻的早期作品，顛覆當時多為「國家觀點」的政宣電影，在1960年代即展現出深具現代色彩的紀錄片，寫實反映當時一心嚮往自由、同時也受到現實束縛的年輕人，也顛覆了大眾對臺灣紀錄片影史的認知。

纪录片《上山》讲述了何建平包山建林的故事。2001年，周至县下岗职工何建平只身一人来到距县城20里远的红旗村骆峪乡，承包了7000亩荒山。当年何建平凭一把砍柴刀，一个破牛棚，怀揣着要把荒山变绿山的坚定信心上了山，一干就是十三年。十三年后，他承包的荒山变绿了吗?他的付出是否得到预期的回报?。本片从十三年前开始，一直跟拍到今天。用大时间跨度的素材，打破以往历史素材讲过往，现拍素材讲当下的分段式剪辑法，通过巧妙融合，完整而生动地讲述了主人公上山以来十几年的故事。

本片是我在广东韶关采风时，遇到的一件小事，当天我把这件事写成了日记。我每次采风期间都爱租一辆摩托或电动车，用以在乡间田野骑行，可这次我低估了南岭山区陡峭的地形，电动车着实费劲儿。这是件不起眼的小事，我也不知道为什么能让我产生记忆，其中必有东西打动了我，我自己不知道罢了。

Looks aren't everything, however, and this is no hollow aesthetic exercise. As we follow alienated protagonist Lulu (Marina Shoif) on an impromptu trip into the darkest reaches of her own psyche - seemingly undertaken as a distraction while an unsatisfactory lover labours away on top of her - writer/director Nina Menkes creates a dreamscape of epic imaginative reach. 大平洋戦争末期。目黒にある山田照子の家も勤めのある父栄三を残し、母歌子、妹英子と直子が疎開の準備。だが照子は海軍予備学生として学徒出陣し土浦航空隊にいる恋人伊東敏郎と離れてしまうのが辛かった。二人の願いは戦争終結だけ。硫黄島陥落の頃戦局は急迫、特攻隊の体当り戦法が採られた。敏郎の戦友三島少尉は出撃の日、許婚の写真を敏郎に託し、敵艦に突入、自爆した。ある日、照子は疎開先から敏郎の隊を訪ね、戦友秋田少尉の計いで二人は海岸で話し合う。死んで行く身で彼女を拘束したくないという敏郎に、一日でもよいから妻にと照子は泣く。やがて簡素な結婚式が行われ、月二度の外出日にお互の無事を確かめ合う新婚生活が続いた。間もなく敏郎は三重県へ転属。面会も許可されぬ照子は不安に襲われる。ある夜、急病で倒れた秋田に代り、敏郎が出撃することになる。彼はガソリンタンクの被弾で基地に戻るが分隊長に面罵され、翌朝再び秋田らと出撃を命令される。敏郎は最後の外出で照子一家を訪れたが明日の出撃を口にだせない。だが照子は懐中の遺書をみつけ、彼のあとを追う決心を固める。翌朝、敏郎と駅頭で永遠の別れを告げた照子は、帰宅して最後の日記をしたためた上、薬をのんだ。帰隊途中で爆撃を受けた敏郎は、よろめきつつも照子の部屋に辿りつき、その死顔に号泣した。彼は照子の横に寝て拳銃をとり出す。やがて敵機の轟音が響く中に発射音が聞えた。
