In this fourth of a four part series, media artist Harun Farocki explores the interplay between modern warfare and electronic media using computer simulation and documentary footage. In the 1910s, journalist Arvid Stjärnblom and painter's daughter Lydia Stille fall in love with each other.

“Immersion” shows a variation of the same training program. In this case it is recreating the traumatic experiences of soldiers during the war for therapeutic purposes. The soldiers are being trained and rehabilitated through virtual reality recalling their memories. Immersion was flmed in Fort Louis, near Seattle, during a treatment of PTSD.

In the autumn of 2009 we filmed a drill at the Marine Corps Base 29 Palms in California. Four Marines sitting in a class represented the crew of a tank. They had laptops in front of them on which they steered their own vehicle and watched others in the unit being driven through a Computer-AnimationLandscape. The simulated Afghan is based on geographical data out of Afghanistan. A street in the computer landscape runs exactly as it would in the real Afghanistan; the same holds for every tree, the vegetation on the ground or the mountain ranges. The instructor places explosive devices and sets insurgents out in the area. A sniper shot the tank gunner, which we documented with the camera. When the tank drives over the fallow it kicks up a dust tail. The more vegetation there is, the less dust. On the asphalt street, no dust. Even with all this attention to detail, death in the computer game is still something different than the real one.

This is a collection of five satyrical short films, including little intermision talk: 　　1) "Kak Sozdavalsya Robinzon" (How Robinson was Created) - writer is comissioned to make soviet version of Robinson Cruzoe; 　　2) "Istoriya s Pirozhkami" (Incident with Pastries) - customer has problems paying for pastries, because he has eaten them before getting to the counter; 　　3) "Inostrantsy" (Foreigners) - about russian people who want to be more like western people; 　　4) "Priyatnogo Appetita" (Bon Appetit) - one episode for restaurant life; 　　5) "Pyos Baros i Neobchainy Kross" (Barbos the hound and Unusual Cross-country Race) - first appearance of later famous Morgunov/Nikulin/Vitsin trio in tale about fishing with dinamite instead of fishing rods

Again, in 29 Palms, we embarked on an exercise with around 300 extras who represented both the Afghan and Iraqi population. A few dozen Marines were on guard and went out on patrol. The town where the maneuver was carried out was on a slight rising in the desert and its buildings were made from containers. It looked as though we had modeled reality on a computer animation.

毎朝新聞の事件記者・石川汎はある日一人の婦人を見て首をかしげた。その婦人は三年前、社の交換手をしていた高橋朝子だった。彼女は小谷茂雄と結婚しているが、交換手時代ふとした事から殺人犯人の声を聞いてしまった。いまだにその不気味な声が耳について離れず、悩まされていた。彼女の夫・茂夫は小心者で、大東京広告社で浜崎社長の部下として働いていた。ある日得意先を招待し、茂雄の家で麻雀をすることになった。薬局の川井、ビリヤード屋の村岡が客である。浜崎の来るのが遅いので、朝子は電話をかけた。電話口からもれて来た声－－彼女は例の不気味な声に余りにも酷似した彼の声に慄然とした。三年前の事件を報ずる新聞の、「質屋殺人事件、殺人現場から犯人の声、深夜、偶然に聞いた電話交換手」……などの見出しが甦って来た。数日後、茂雄が浜崎と喧嘩をして血だらけで帰って来た。しかも浜崎は郊外で死体となって発見された。茂雄は容疑をかけられ留置された。朝子を訊ね事情を聴取した石川は、アリバイがあることを発見し、調査に乗り出した。彼は第一に麻雀のメンバーの一人・川井を訪ねた。得たことは浜崎から恐喝されているということ、茂雄に浜崎と手を切れとすすめたこと、そしてバーで飲んでいたというアリバイであった。村岡を訪ねた石川はその乾分からマリという情婦のことを聞き出した。そして小平町に家があることも。村岡はその時はプロレスのテレビを見てい、朝まで飲み明かしたと申立てた。しかし村岡が二十分ばかり中座したことを聞き出し、石川は彼への疑いを濃くした。実地検証の結果、殺人現場は田端駅近くの貯炭場であることと、茂雄の犯行自白が発表された。朝子は夫の無実を信じ、石川と共に秘かに村岡の身辺を探っていた。二人は貯炭場を訪れ、そこで犯人の思わぬ失敗を見つけた。殺人当日は土砂降りだったのに、そこに落ちていた黒いボストンバッグは濡れていなかったというのこ。しかし、二十分という時間を考えると、総ては不可解であった。石川は帰宅後ポケットから出て来た貯炭場の石炭の粉を見て暗示を与えられた。彼は小平町に村岡を呼び出した。先廻りした石川は刑事と共に女の家に張込んだ。村岡は総てを自白した。それによると、彼は川井に命令されて小平で殺人を行い、石炭の粉に着目し、あたかも貯炭場で殺したように死体に粉をつけて偽の殺人現場を作ったのであった。
