Presented by Julian Davison, OTTOMANS VERSUS CHRISTIANS “The Battle For Europe” travels to the Balkans, Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, where the power struggle between Christian Europe and the Muslim Ottoman Empire lasted for centuries. 　　Featuring interviews with top historians, live reenactments of pivotal events, and visits to historical sites, this three-part series explores a legendary clash of civilizations and its continuing repercussions in the modern world. 　　Episode 1: "Dream of Empire” airs Monday, April 10 at 11 p.m. - This episode traces the history of Ottoman influence in the Balkans over four centuries. 　　Episode 2: “Vienna – The Golden Apple” airs Tuesday, April 11 at 11 p.m. - This episode focuses on Ottoman advances into Europe in the 15th-17th centuries, climaxing in the second siege of Vienna in 1683. 　　Episode 3: “The Sick Man of Europe” airs Wednesday, April 12 at 11 p.m. - This final episode explores the relationship between the Ottoman Empire and Tsarist Russia, which resulted in the Crimean War in 1853, dragging in troops from France and England.

Richard Harris was nominated for several awards (including the Oscar and Golden Globe) for his performance in The Field. The time is the mid-1930s; the place, western Ireland. For many years rugged individualist Bull McCabe (Harris) has been cultivating a small plot of rented land, nurturing it from barren rock into a fertile field. Now, however, the widow who owns the land plans to sell it at auction. The infuriated Bull shows up at the bidding, secure in his belief that none of his neighbors will dare bid against him. But Bull has not taken into consideration a wealthy Irish-American (Tom Berenger), who intends to pave over the land and bring new industry to the area. "This is deep, very deep, deeper than you think" warns Bull, as he sends his grown son (Sean Bean) to "persuade" the American to withdraw his bid. Armed with the foreknowledge that Bull's tenacity has caused heartbreak and tragedy in the past, the audience steels itself for the awful consequences still to come. Punctuating the storyline are the periodic appearances of the toothless village idiot, played by John Hurt.
