40年代逃荒到辽西山区的姑娘棉桃，不幸落入土匪刘八爷手中，棉桃逃跑的路上，被追逼无奈跳入河谷，铁匠水印发现后将她救回家中。四方游走的货郎与棉桃相遇，两人一见钟情，但为感谢水印的救命之恩，棉桃嫁给了水印。货郎伤心而去。刘八爷发现了棉桃，将她抓回关人刘府内。棉桃不从，将刘八爷刺伤，紧急时刻货郎救出棉桃，两人逃跑路上货郎被土匪击中，他向棉桃倾诉了心中的爱慕后离开了人世。

本片是根据导演萨沙·盖特耶自己创作于1912年的同名剧本改编，是一部剧场话剧。讲述了从头天下午到第二天早上这段不到24小时的时间里，发生在一个房间里的故事。情节朴素简单，一共有三个主要角色：丈夫、妻子和客人。盖特耶本人饰演丈夫，并在影片中有一段长达17分钟的独白，足见其语言功底深厚。本片是一部“风尚喜剧”(法语"Comédie de mœurs", 一种描写和讽刺社会时尚的喜剧)
