富孀钱夫人有女名韵琴，是一位恃财狂傲的小姐。韵琴的表兄杜伯群是一位风度翩翩的美少年，钱夫人属意伯群已久，认为他是自家女婿的最佳人选，伯群的父亲也希望亲上加亲，促成这门婚事。而伯群外出游山，遇见采茶女鲍素素心生爱慕。鲍父是一位渔民，也很喜欢伯群，每逢出去打鱼必约上伯群，伯群与素素感情日笃。一日，伯群得家书，唤他回家为姑母祝寿，伯群人虽回去，但心系素素，席间对韵琴十分冷淡，韵琴很生气，于是买通了一名季姓男子，让他暗中侦察伯群，不久，季某得到伯群寄给素素的信，交给钱氏母女，她们给季某一笔钱，让他设法将鲍氏父女迁走，以绝伯群之念。不料季某见素素貌美，不但没把他们迁走，反而把他们带到自己家中，把鲍父灌醉后欲调戏素素，素素打碎玻璃窗呼救，恰好伯群经过，闻声相救，二人逃往城外，季某带手下追来，又将素素劫走，藏在一座荒庙中，被一个姓傅的小男孩发现，将素素带回自己家。伯群的父亲需要一万元偿还债务，嘱伯群往钱家告贷，钱夫人以婚事要挟，伯群回家告诉父亲，父亲希望他答应这门婚事，伯群踌躇间与素素在郊外不期而遇，随素素来到傅家，将自己的遭遇相告，素素劝他遵从父命，并把自己的照片送给伯群，嘱日后勿再相见。伯群回家将此事告诉父亲，不料打开装照片的信封，见到一张一万元的银票，父子二人连忙赶往傅家。这时，季某也侦察到素素的行踪，带着鲍老和钱氏母女来到傅家，鲍老很生气地走进傅家门，傅家园丁疑为盗匪将他打成重伤，伯群闻声出来说明缘由，所有的人都被邀进傅家。鲍老垂危之际向众人说明，素素非自己亲生，而是15年前遭匪乱时在河边拾得的弃婴，还有一块佩玉为证。傅家小姐见玉惊呼“这是我家祖传的佩玉，是我失踪多年的妹妹的”。至此，素素方知自己身世。伯群的父亲问傅小姐这一万元银票何来？傅小姐说“我听到伯群与素素交谈后，让小弟设计掉取照片，只想玉成他们的好事，教训一下那些恃富凌贫，有金钱无公理的人，不想竟帮助了自己的妹妹”。众人听后皆大欢喜，只有钱氏母女悄然离去。

City Deep is about so-called Zama zamas, illegal mineworkers who scour abandoned mines for remnants of gold. Kentridge mixes the world of the mineworkers with, among others, the Johannesburg Art Gallery, built during the heyday of the gold industry and colonialism. 　　Drawings for Projection marked Kentridge’s international breakthrough as an engaged artist with a sense of commitment and a concern for developments in his native country.
