什么是天赋？科学能够解释天赋么？天赋是与生俱来的异禀还是后天努力的结果？天赋跟基因过关么？天才到底跟普通人有什么本质区别？……这就是马库斯·杜·索托伊，一位数学系教授所要探索的问题。面对如此之多的疑问，马库斯从人类的大脑着手分析，又研究了基因和环境方面对天赋的影响等等。马库斯教授采访了多位极具代表性的个例：汤米，一位把整栋房子都当作他作画画布的疯狂艺术家；德里克，一名双目失明且患有自闭症，却在音乐方面堪称天才的钢琴家；克莱尔同样一位对声音非常敏感的盲人。与此同时，马库斯也对初生婴儿的大脑进行了研究分析，并且跟神经科学家取证，甚至找到了如何通过科学方法来强化我们大脑的方法。 本部纪录片就是在尝试用这些科学的手段来回答和解释这些问题，试图揭开“天才到底是怎么炼成”的这一命题。
