This story is about a musician, Natalie, who moves to a big city and tries her luck at becoming famous. And here she finds not only a great opportunity for her career, but also a new love with another girl, Anna. 那是1975年前后发生的事……青年工人杨明，是一个利欲熏心的极端个人主义者。他为了达到往上爬的目的，主动靠近文化局革委会代主任宁乔的女儿宁燕。以谈恋爱为名，想借此调进文化局工作。宁乔对杨明很赏识，杨对宁更是俯首贴耳，百依百顺。1975年，邓小平同志主持中央日常工作，对各条战线进行了整顿。宁乔停职检查了。"文化大革命"前担任文化局长的肖毅获得了重新工作的机会。善于察言观色、看风使舵的杨明，断然抛弃了宁燕，转过身去追求肖毅的女儿肖英。肖英原来是个舞蹈演员，因受父亲的牵连，只得改行去洗衣服。有着事业心的肖英，不顾条件的限制，仍坚持练功。这时，杨明向她倾吐了爱情，她竟信以为真，看不清杨明的虚伪本质，甚至于把父亲的忠告与提醒放在一边。就在肖英下乡接父亲回城工作时，认识了忠厚、老实、有眼光的知识青年董林。董林在乡下严格要求自己，从老干部身上学习到许多好东西，写出了反映青年生活的长篇小说 《路》。肖英从心里佩服董林，彼此也产生了感情。1976年初，所谓"反击右倾翻案风"运动开始了，两面三刀的杨明，公然出卖肖毅，抛弃了肖英，再一次投靠宁乔。而肖英，在严峻生活的考验下，懂得了认识一个人并不是一件容易的事，像董林那样的青年人，才是值得学习和尊敬的人。
