1977年恢复高考之后，陇口镇知情徐天（吴秀波 饰）与女友吴晴（吴越 饰）的异地恋也有了转机。吴晴的母亲得知女儿怀孕之后，逼着女儿与徐天约法三章：徐天只有考上大学，挣到一千块钱，才能娶吴晴为妻。这令徐天倍感压力。高考当日，他与哥们费兵邂逅了美术考生梅果（董洁 饰），后者的书包被小偷掠走，徐天拼命去追，追到的包里有一千块钱。徐天一念之差，丢掉了梅果的准考证。与高考失之交臂，令梅果发疯不能自已，愧疚的徐天一直照顾她。几经周折，吴晴和同事陆秦生都考入医科大学。但徐天因与村支书闹僵而成绩作废，吴晴气得绝望。陆秦生几次带话，令徐天忍无可忍，他登门来访，却听吴晴说已经堕胎。悲愤之下，两人婚事告吹。徐天来到棉纺厂工作，令厂花何佳（海清 饰）为之心动，后者一直付出，而徐天却在吴晴与梅果的情感中纠结。某天，徐天偶然遇见了一位中年人（张嘉译 饰），后者赠他《心经》金句，成为他命运的转折……
