20世纪60年代末，北方某省会城市“光字片”区居住着周姓一家，父亲周志刚在西南参加“大三线”建设，长子 周秉义响应国家号召成为第一批下乡知青，长女 周蓉追随诗人丈夫远赴贵州乡村，周家只留下小弟 周秉昆与周母相依为命。在五十年的岁月里周家人的命运与时代变迁交织在一起，周秉义大学毕业后从政，在大刀阔斧的改革中经历仕途沉浮；周蓉获得博士学位后留校任教，却情路坎坷。周秉昆与美丽又不幸的女子郑娟相濡以沫，经历下岗的阵痛和“下海”的挑战，在平凡的岁月里扶持邻里亲友共同前进。一家人在完成各自人生使命的同时，也书写了一部当代中国百姓的生活史诗 。
