大好青年车文杰（刘德华 饰）邂逅了公司老板千金程乐儿（关之琳 饰），在乐儿好友Banana（邱淑贞 饰）的撮合下两人迅速陷入热恋。乐儿前男友金默基（李子雄 饰）得知情况后，马上对车文杰产生敌意，聘请整蛊专家古晶（周星驰 饰）作弄车文杰，让他一无所有。于是古晶假扮车文杰父亲车亲仁（吴孟达 饰）从大陆来的私生子，从中捣乱。古晶的到来令车文杰的生活打乱，一切事仿佛都在古晶的操控之中。但Banana发现了古晶的真实身份，劝古晶顾念车家父子对他的照顾，转过头帮忙车文杰对付金默基。

整蛊王高兴（刘青云）以整蛊为业，但从不恃强凌弱，花花公子史松想聘请高兴去对付抗议他的工人领袖，但高兴不愿助纣为虐，反而把史松整蛊了一把，史松一怒之下请出整蛊界的另一高手玩人大帝刘家拎（罗家英）来对付高兴，刘家拎很快就整蛊了高兴的两个助手刘血（葛民辉）和毕止（林海峰），高兴在躲避暗算时撞伤了盲女阿MOON（袁咏仪），因而耽误了她的眼角膜手术，出于同情他将阿MOON接回家中照顾。经过一段时间的相处，高兴与阿MOON渐渐产生感情，高兴还决定将自己的眼角膜换给阿MOON，不料阿MOON竟然就是刘家拎的女儿，受父亲之命来欺骗高兴。得知真相的高兴万念俱灰，但阿MOON其实也对高兴产生了真感情，她化解了父亲与高兴之间的仇恨，并与高兴有情人终成眷属。
