Lana Gogoberidze belongs to the generation of directors that made their débuts in the 1970s. Gogoberidze works mainly with lyrical material and is drawn to the stories of young lives. She has also directed the films Pod odnim nebom (Under One Sky), Ya vizhu solntse (See the Sun), and Rubezhi (Frontiers). Lana Gogoberidze's film primarily focus on the realistic, nonsentimental, portrayal of women's lives. Before enrolling in the State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, she attended the University of Tbilisi where she had originally planned on becoming a literary scholar. She wrote her doctoral thesis on American poet Walt Whitman. Upon graduating from VGIK, she made her first feature film, Pod odnim nebom (1961). Her first film to gain international recognition was Neskolko interviu po lichnym voprosam (1979). In 1984, her film Den Dlinnee nochi was entered into the Cannes Film Festival by her government. In 1986 her film Krugovorot won the director's award at the Tokyo Film Festival. Educated at Tbilisi State University and Moscow State University of Cinematography, she headed Director's Studio at the Rustaveli Theatre School, Tbilisi, in 1975 and directed the studio Kartuli P'ilmi (Georgia Film) in 1988. She was elected to the Parliament of Georgia from 1992 to 1995. In 2004, she served as Georgia's Ambassador to France. Her fiction and documentary movies have won several international awards.
