Set in the summer months preceding the September 1939 outbreak of World War II in Polish part of Lithuania. A young highschool lad, Witek, is hoping to pass the entrance exams to the university. His love interest is Alina, his high-school colleague.

In the Civil War, Union soldiers are about to hang a defiant Confederate planter from a bridge, for sabotage. The noose is placed around his neck, but the rope breaks and he plummets from the bridge into a river. Dazed, he swims the rapids downstream, while the soldiers fire at him. He clambers on a river bank, and excitedly starts his journey back to his family plantation.

When the management of the Paris Museum of Natural History decided that their vast collection of taxidermied wildlife was in need of restoration, Philibert decided that the 3-year process needed to be documented. 　　As the painstaking work of re-ruffling feathers and replacing tiny glass eyes and wings is thoughtfully observed, so too is the complex relationship between humans and animals, as the filmmaker grants a visceral subjectivity to these macabre and beautiful objects.
