明末崇祯年间，宦官曹化淳（刘一帆饰）权力势大，密谋篡位，弄得朝廷乌烟瘴气，时盗贼四起，民不聊生，国运日衰，崇祯（张瑛饰）对曹化淳却无可奈何，后在长平公主（米雪饰）策划下，与昭仁公主（余安安饰）共同邀得袁崇焕儿子——武林第一高手中原桃花剑袁若飞（姜大卫饰）合作诛曹。此间长平公主与袁若飞互为知己，彼此钟情，只因国仇家恨种种恩怨终只换来一声叹息。 　　曹患刚灭，李自成（麦天恩饰）又率起义军直逼京师，崇祯欲用长平公主远交近攻之策对付李自成。为应对清廷开出的皇族出使才能和谈的条件长平公主与周世显（刘松仁饰）假意成婚。周世显出使清廷，不料成功回来之日方知京城已被乱兵所破，崇祯自缢煤山。 　　崇祯临死前下罪己诏为袁崇焕洗去冤屈，袁若飞放下家仇与长平公主护送太子逃亡。期间为护太子中了曹化淳义子左云苓（莫少聪饰）蛇毒断去右臂，后更因兵器被换被捉到清廷，此时周世显找到长平，长平被周世显真情打动与之相认，二人为救袁若飞假意归顺清廷，并将内力赠与袁若飞后在成亲之日双双饮毒殉国。而袁若飞终成功护送太子突围并击杀左云苓。
