This experimental documentary uses the life stories of a Chinese woman artist to explore alternatives to dominant versions of history. Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, she first came to the U.S. to study, and then, after the government crackdown, to live. FLOW's narratives of the Cultural Revolution are constructed from her extremely personal and often satirical points of view. The fragments of her memory are used to undermine the master narrative of history. Yau Ching writes, "An exiled native speaks a language not fully comprehensible to her 'fellow-natives' any more. A part of her is not able to go back any more. Given its politically subversive content, the very fact that this tape can only be made here, when the native is not at home, highlights the limitations of 'home.' Her memory haunts her and blocks her from being assimilated by the dominant American society. Afternoon Hearsay by Peng Zuqiang reflects on the nature of image-making and how cultural, historical, and political narratives are shared and circulated. Through voices, hearsay, and imagination, the film reconstructs a fragmented history of 8.75mm film—a unique format developed and produced exclusively in China between the 1960s and 1980s—and traces the faded paths of alternative cinematic spaces. Using cameraless techniques and photochemical abstraction, Peng meditates on disappearance and memory, posing the question: what is a film without a camera?

Although Charley Kying (Clark Gable) has owned a casino for 15 years, on one rainy night events and people seem to converge and threaten his family home and second home, his gambling house. After a doctor secretly diagnoses him with a severe heart condition and recommends that if he continues to subject himself to the daily stress of a professional gambler, he hasn't long to live. Later that day he's made to realize that he's been neglecting his faithful wife (Alexis Smith) for years and abdicated his duties as father to his son (Daryl Hickman), who resents his father's unsavory reputation and rebuffs his interest in attending that night's prom. Charley's weakling brother-in-law (Wendell Corey), who sponges off him by freeloading at home and cheating him out of petty cash as croupier, agrees to conspire with rival gamblers to cheat Charley out of thousands. Among the others who add stress to what would seem to be Charley's last night in the casino are a rich former girlfriend (Mary Astor) who proposes they renew their relationship, an old nemesis (Frank Morgan) who's vowing to break the bank at the tables, and an old degenerate gambler and former mentor (Lewis Stone) whose desperation leads him to try to take his own life.
