Large portions of the film depict director Jean Renoir and his former actor Michel Simon talking about various matters in real time on a particular day. The roving camera generally stays close to them, but it also moves around the table at various points, capturing interviewer-director Rivette, some of the camera equipment, and other people present in the same space. While the earthy conversation of Renoir and Simon is engrossing, the viewer is never allowed to forget that this seemingly casual encounter between friends is mediated by the director and crew, and the final film includes shots of clapboards, of someone putting a hand over the camera lens, and even of a blank screen as the camera battery is reloaded. Even more pronounced intervention occurs as sequences from films Renoir and Simon made together are inserted at unexpected moments. There are no clear transitions separating these excerpts from the main body of the film, and the sound from the conversation continues over (or at least bleeds into) the clips, creating a dialogue between remembered, lived, and represented experiences, which become increasingly intertwined as the film progresses. 　　—— Richard I. 二十多岁的孙头头 （赵露思 饰）无父无母，孑然一身，不问过往，不求未来。浑浑噩噩中的一次打抱不平让她意外惹上麻烦，中医药大学教授任新正 （吴刚 饰）及时帮助了她，并发现了她的身世故事，于是决定带她加入中医传承班，帮助她重启人生，混不吝的孙头头从此踏上师从任新正、传承家学的求学之路。没想到在班上她与任新正的儿子任天真 （罗一舟 饰）彼此看不顺眼，闹出不少风波。师承之路道阻且长，师徒之间性格迥异，孙头头不断碰壁不断成长，逐渐热爱上优秀传统文化，也与任天真从对立到相互理解、惺惺相惜。求索的过程中，师父传道解惑，让徒弟们找到自己的命运之路；徒弟们用自己的善良、勇敢、青春激情让师父倍受启发。孙头头和师父、同学们结伴同行，踏上追逐的梦想的道路。

中医药大学教授任新正（吴刚 饰）一心广传中医，为此他辞去工作创办了中医传承班，旨在培养出能真正传承中医之道的接班人。“混不吝”孙头头（赵露思 饰）意外加入了师承班，她与任新正的儿子任天真（罗一舟 饰）关系恶劣，和从律师转行的杨小红（张萌 饰）、三甲医院儿科医生彭十堰（周澄奥 饰）、背负全村期望想成为名医的赵力权（朱俊麟 饰）等同学也相处得不太融洽。 这些带着各自困惑而来的学生，在心怀大愿的任新正、宋灵兰（江珊 饰）等师长的引领下，在琐碎繁杂的生活中朝着传承中医道统的目标努力奋进，以新生力量学习和传承中医传统文化。

故事发生在堂德森审判数月后，梅森搬离了农场，抛弃了运奶卡车，他甚至用自己的皮夹克换了套笔挺的西装。大萧条时期最糟糕的一年，梅森和黛拉为了让公司走上了一条更稳妥的道路，决定专注于处理民事案件，而渐渐远离刑事案件所带来的快节奏的工作。而保罗由于在遗嘱和合同方面没有太多的工作，也决定独自出去打拼。洛杉矶发生了一起枪杀案，两名住在贫民区的墨西哥裔男子拉斐和马提欧成为了嫌疑人，他们姑姑带着拉斐的妻子来到了梅森的事务所请求他们的帮助，出于对正义的追求，梅森和黛拉还是接下了这个案子，而这个看似明朗的案件实际上并非如看上去的那样一目了然，于是梅森和黛拉找到保罗寻求帮助。梅森找回了往日的动力，黛拉和保罗两人也发挥各自的优势，三人携手抽丝剥茧，探查案件背后的真相。
