《百年巨匠》是中国第一部聚焦20世纪为中华文明作出突出贡献的大师巨匠的大型系列人物传记纪录片，是中办国办组织实施的“中华优秀传统文化传承发展工程”重点项目。《百年巨匠》由中国文联、中央广播电视总台、中国艺术研究院、百年艺尊（北京）文化传播有限公司等单位联合摄制。 《百年巨匠》是在深入学习贯彻落实习近平总书记2014年10月在文艺工作座谈会上的重要讲话精神而全力推动的一个重点文化项目。针对文艺创作有“高原”、缺“高峰”的问题，《百年巨匠》站在时代的高度，以“巨匠精神”弘扬中华优秀传统文化，以“世纪工程”践行社会主义核心价值观，以“大师形象”树立起一座座文化自信的丰碑。 此次推优的《百年巨匠——吴冠中》将以每集30分钟，共计3集的故事节奏讲述吴冠中先生的创作与人生进行精彩而深刻地揭示，在真实再现吴老风采和作品魅力的基础上，深刻阐释中华文化的丰富内涵，全面展示中国文化艺术的独特魅力。
