本片围绕着一把唐朝贞观年间流传下来的“潺泉”古琴展开。 贺文魁曾经是香港丰盛洋行的紫城主管，因为抗战爆发，闲居家中。自称古董商的英杰华慕名前来，想要一睹他珍藏的潺泉古琴，遭到拒绝。却原来这英杰华是贺家大儿子国荣的同学，又正与小女儿国瑛交往。他们于是拉上老二国辉，想偷得老爷子的古琴换取十万大洋。 一场夺琴的争斗正在悄悄上演。国瑛辗转把古琴偷卖给了古董商。却原来那把古琴是假的，真的一直被贺文魁藏在鸡舍中，故称凰宅古琴。而窥视古琴的日本人和奸商都落了个人财两空的下场。
