明朝的庆王朱旃无意间发现了贺兰山东麓的神秘建筑群，他翻阅古籍史料，初步了解到建筑的身份。70年代，以钟侃为代表的考古工作者再一次发现了神秘建筑，经过科学的发掘研究，确定了建筑群的身份——西夏九位帝王的陵墓。考古工作者对帝陵的研究正式展开，西夏帝王陵的神秘面纱逐渐被揭开。党项人独有的帝陵布局，帝陵主人的归属逐一得到确认。然而，帝陵破坏严重，墓室被洗劫一空，很多谜团仍然找不到答案。进入新世纪，对于西夏王陵新一轮的大规模考古活动启动，一个新的发现，对之前得出的考古结论带来冲击，帝陵的主人很可能与之前的推测完全不一样，新的文物的出土，让西夏王陵当年的形象越来越完整。一座座气势恢宏的西夏帝陵被复原出来，每一座帝陵的主人有了新的归属。对于西夏王陵的考古仍将继续，还有很多未解之谜等待考古学者去努力探索。
