絵師金蔵は二十歳。長身、たくましい骨大な体躯。しかし、彼の評判はよくない。きちがい、変態という蔭口がたたかれ、事実、彼は傲慢で不潔であった。天才が常にそうであるように、彼もまた自らを信じることが強かった。彼の母は髪結である。父も髪結である。彼の才能を発見したのは母親クメだった。母は彼を士分待遇の御城絵師に仕立てようと異常な情熱をたぎらせた。金蔵の才能を買った師の推せんと母の熱望によって彼は江戸に遊学した。出京するや早速師についた金蔵だったが、すでに自らを権力にならすことによって、保身の安定をはかろうとする狩野派の堕落はひどく、そこには人工美はあっても生きた美はなかった。こうして、政治と文化の中心である江戸に失望してゆき、女にはしり、酒におぼれ、刺青の倒錯の魔力に魅せられていった。三年の歳月が流れ、彼は土佐へ帰った。城下は不気味な胎動をはらみ、友人武田市之助は革新運動に参加すべく脱藩を試みていた。しかし、彼には体制を一新させようとするこの運動には率直に飛び込めなかった。彼は師の世話で御城絵師の一人に加えられ、土佐に帰ってきた徳姫の注文で、師の美雅と共に奥書院の襖絵を描くことになった。これと前後して、母の妹の旅芸居の一行がやってきたことから、金蔵の出生の秘密が暴き出されそうになるが、母は永遠にその秘密を葬ろうと自ら剃刀で命を断った。鮮血に染った母の美しい死に顔を金蔵は凝視する。彼は権力への挑戦として、美雅と、江戸の師の名でニセ絵を描き始めた。しかし、金蔵に深い影響を与えた倫落の女雪も、ニセ絵は抵抗のためなら描いてもいいが、ゼニのために描いてはならないといって自決した。金蔵は追放された。いまや金蔵は権力の門から閉め出され、野にさまよいでた。そこに待っていたものは南国の騒ぐ血を持つ農漁民であった。死んだ絵の世界から追放された金蔵は、生きた絵の世界へといまこそ一歩をふみこんでゆく。こうして、金蔵の体内から太々しい生命力の溢れる原色の泥の世界が生まれるのである。
