以地狱博士为首的科学家们在爱琴海上的一个岛屿中发现了已经灭绝的古代文明遗留下来的机器人。在地狱博士的建议下，科学家们修复了这些机器人。然而掌握了这种机器人技术的地狱博士却露出了他征服世界的野心，杀死了所有的科学家。 不过有一个人却逃出了小岛，他就是日本光子力研究所的所长兜十蔵。为了阻止地狱博士的野心，兜十蔵秘密制造了超级机器人魔神Z。不过兜十蔵自己也遭到了地狱博士手下阿修罗男爵派出的铁甲面部队的暗杀，临死前将魔神Z托付给了自己的孙子兜甲儿和兜次郎。为了维护世界的和平，兜甲児驾驶爷爷留下的魔神Z与地狱博士的机械兽军团展开了战斗……
