Sivan (Mohanlal) is a well-respected don in the area of Madurai. After his driver was killed in an altercation with a few enemies, including a rowdy cop, he takes the driver's son Shakthi (Vijay) as his own. Shakthi grows up with a vengeful hatred towards the Police uniform and any other Khaki clothing. Even towards his eventual lover (Kajal), initially hating, but then seeing her good side, But it is when his Father desires him to wear the uniform, that turn the tables on the illegal work of Sivan. How Shakthi deals with his Father, and an unknown assailant forms the crux of the story.

Diane, a young woman growing up in Australia in the mid 1960s, walks away from her fiancé to join a convent after being sure she has a calling to the faith. The Catholic Church and its followers are struggling with huge changes. The Pope has died, there is war in Vietnam and mandatory conscription, there is the Vatican controversy on abortion and contraception, and the changing face of the Church as a whole. Told in six parts, Diane faces her own demons and has to finally decide if she can teach what the Church preaches, or if it's simply impossible for her to reconcile all the contradictions of the faith and uphold her vow of obedience.

徳川幕府がキリシタンの根絶に躍起となっていた頃、長崎の奉行所で南蛮バテレンのキリシトファ・フェレラは拷問の苦しさに堪えかね、幕府の政策に協力することを誓った。若い南蛮鋳物師萩原裕佐はキリシタンの娘モニカを愛しているが、モニカの父多門は裕佐がキリシタンでないので、結婚を許さなかった。フェレラの密告で多門が捕えられ、悲惨な最後を遂げた。ある日、フェレラは下役人岩吉からキリシタン根絶に妙案はないかと訊かれ、踏絵の代りに鋳物のキリスト像を用いることを進言した。奉行所の手先となった絵師孫四郎が、商家の若旦那に頼まれたと偽って、裕佐にこの仕事を引き受けさせた。裕佐はモニカへの愛のため、見事な青銅のキリスト像を仕上げたが、フェレラの提案で踏絵代りに使われると知って激怒し、モニカの弟吉三郎にフェレラにこそ憎むべき裏切り者だと告げた。裏切り者を殺そうといきり立つ吉三郎を押し止めたモニカは、和蘭屋敷にフェレラを訪ね、彼の良心にうったえて翻心させようとするが、フェレラはきかなかった。フェレラが何者かに狙撃されたのはそれから間もなくのことである。クリスマスの夜、儀右衛門の家に集まった信者たちは、まだ傷の癒えぬフェレラの案内で乗り込んだ役人に捕えられた。処刑の日、信徒たちは、裕佐の精魂こめて作ったキリストの前にひざまづいて礼拝した。それを見た奉行は、最後まで信徒でないといい張る裕佐を、背後から突き刺した。十字架にかけられた信従たちの口から讃美歌が唱えられた。その下に葡いよった瀕死の裕佐は、初めてモニカの愛の言葉を聞いた。地獄繪さながらの光景を前に「いつの世にもユダはいる」とつぶやくようにいったのはフェレラであった。
