A back-and-forth correspondence between two filmmakers living in Tokyo and Taipei. These video letters began during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was difficult for them to meet in person, and continued until 2024. The letters follow a simple rule: each reply must quote a sound or image from the previous letter. These quotations become loose threads connecting the letters, yet each one stands alone as a complete, self-contained world.

In the summer of 2021, Johan Chang, who lives in Taipei, and Masa Kudo, who lives in Tokyo, began a video correspondence with the rule that reply by quoting sounds or pictures from the images sent by the other. It was during the period of COVID-19 that two filmmakers couldn’t meet in person. Letters, which have been used as a means of communication since ancient times, with the effect of condensing, deepening, and materializing emotions. The letters sent to each other, evoking the senders’ daily life. The work shown in this screening is part of a two-year video correspondence that has been compiled into a circular work with no beginning and no end. Each letter is a complete small world.

Cezanne's Eye is an experiential journey through the body of a unique landscape - that of Cezanne's Provence. Using intuitive and expressionist visual language and a striking specially composed soundtrack (by Stuart Jones) the film is a movement through land, sky, colour, sound and music that is both sensual and visually challenging. In Stan Brakhage’s words, Cezanne's Eye is “the most significant camera as paintbrush film in the history of cinema”.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN is thrilled to present one of the most talked about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington. 　　One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now.
