Although an animal, Horse is easily as intelligent as Cowboy and Indian (put together) and is the leader of the "family" he, Cowboy and Indian are part of. He maintains a cool head, doesn't engage in the foolish pursuits of Cowboy and Indian and keeps a semblance of normality in the house. 辛亥革命前夕，居於北京城的满族旗人仍过著他们无忧无虑的日子。富察端康就是其中之一。端康性本豁达开朗，善良正直。由于衣食无虑，平时与友人玩耍度日。一日，端康在市集上，见一日本人以比武维生，张磊为嬴取彩金不惜与日本人比武，但败阵下来，日人穷追直打，端康出手相救，仍不是对手，适有侍书姑娘出言相逼，日人方肯罢手，端康对侍书念念不忘，藉探视张磊伤势为由，与侍书接近。侍书乃豫亲王府格格纳兰如意的乔装，如意对端康亦深具好感，屡屡瞒著家人与端康见面。 　　清朝朝不保夕，豫亲王急欲将如意亲事底定，如意拒绝不果，只得与端康断绝来往。端康前往王府欲替侍书赎身，才获悉如意乃贵为格格。豫亲王不虞有此，怒斥如意，并指称端康是登徒子浪子，不学无术。端康不死心，伺机潜入王府，盼能再见如意，但被豫亲王发现，将端康痛殴重伤。张磊看不过眼，提议二人远走他乡。 　　二人背著行囊，连夜出城，适逢民贼放火抢掠。二人遭人群冲散，如意几经挣扎，逃返家中，但家园已毁，如意险遭盗匪欺凌，幸头目姚世昌出言阻止。世昌祖上皆被旗人所欺，母亲并因而发疯昌事母至孝，自幼即对旗人充满怨恨，如意唯恐世昌发现自己的身份，只得假称自己是王府的丫环。 　　端康被视作抢匪抓入狱中，不料张磊亦在其间，二人互诉别后的遭遇。端康一家亦被掠夺一空，端康母叶赫那拉氏、妹端敏用仅余的财物，换得入狱见端康一面。端康与张磊行刑时，宣统辞位，二人逃过一劫。端康家生活无著，为维持生计，端康只得从事最卑微的工作。 　　如意借住世昌家，悉心照顾世昌母亲，世昌对如意深藏爱意，世昌在友人推荐下，由一介盗匪当上警察。如意终寻到老父，欲藉此搬离世昌家，不料世昌反而将如意父母接来同住。豫亲王洞悉世昌心事，欲说服如意，如意无耐之余，只得对世昌说明自己实乃旗人，并将端康与自己的恋情全盘托出。世昌表面上应承代为查访端康下落，实则妒火中烧。为使如意死心，世昌假造公文，讹称端康已遭处决。如意顿时了无生趣世昌劝之以父母为重。世昌遭对敌枪杀，身受重伤，幸得如意在旁看护，世昌对如意用情日深。 　　端康四处找不到如意，心情落寞，小宝将一切看在眼里，不禁对端康改观。桂香因豪赌欠下巨款，小宝只好嫁给太监小福德换得银两替母偿赌债。端康为小宝作为不值，并转达张磊的爱慕之意。小宝在新婚之夜预备杀小福德以自卫，不料小福德反而对阿宝唯命是从，小宝如释重负。小宝实则对端康倾心，但端康一无所觉，宝只有假称自己被小福德虐待，以博端康的同情。叶氏看出小宝的用心，劝端康把握机会，但端康表示心中只有如意一人。张磊为替小宝出头，将小福德痛殴一顿，小宝自觉过份，求小福德谅解，福写下乙纸休书还小宝自由，小宝感动之余，自愿与福义结为兄妹。　 　　小宝与端康患难相扶，端康为偿小宝的恩情，答应娶宝为妻。北京城内出现一名歌女曲玲珑，容貌与如意无异，端康与世昌因曲玲珑，各怀心事，平静的生活，再起涟漪。

富察端康（黄日华 饰）是一位正直善良的青年，某日，在一场意外中，端康结识了名为如意（周海媚 饰）的女子，如意的有胆有识巾帼不让须眉深深吸引了端康的注意，借着探视好友张磊（谢祖武 饰）的机会，端康常常私会如意。然而，如意的真实身份，其实是豫亲王府的格格，而豫亲王有意将如意许配给门当户对的公子哥。 　　得知这一消息，焦急的端康潜入亲王府，希望能够见到如意，却被豫亲王捉住打成重伤。在张磊的提一下，端康和如意决定私奔，然而途中却被人流冲散。当如意千辛万苦回到家中时，却发现王府早已经变成了一片废墟。无奈之下，如意只得隐瞒了自己的身份，成为了一个身份低微的王府丫鬟。
