青海省の西寧とチベットのラサを結ぶ青海チベット国道は平均海抜４200メートル、富士山よりなお400メートル余り高い世界最高海抜の国道である。軍事的政治的要路として建設され、巨費と一千人あまりと言われる犠牲者を出して195４年開通した。以来この国道はチベット的世界と漢民族的世界とを結ぶ大動脈となってきた。 　　沿道に広がるのは大草原の花畑と湖、少数民族の集落、中国人民解放軍の兵舎、無人の荒地、屹立する崑崙山脈……。国道を行くのは五体投地しながらラサを目指す巡礼者、物資を満載した軍用トラックの車列、環境保護管理官、サイクリングの青年、遊牧民……。 　　外国人の行動には多くの制限があり、取材の難しかったこの国道2000キロを光り輝く短い夏、走破する。
