北方电影制片厂的助理导演陈小秋与道具员刘若增为给《萧相国与韩信》影片中的萧何挑选一匹白色坐骑而四处奔波。她们来到某骑兵部队求援，战士郑大群接受任务，帮助选马并驯马。他们来到草原牧场未能选到理想的马，后来从一位老牧民处得悉乳品站有一匹好马。在去乳品站在路上，郑大群发现一匹拉车的惊马挣断肚带弃车狂逃，四蹄生风，实为一匹好马。他们逐追寻到兽医站，马主人正为此马难驯而准备把它骟掉。郑大群经与陈小秋、刘若增商议决定买下此马，起名为"雪驹"。当郑大群初次骑上这匹马时，竟被摔在地上。回到电影制片厂，郑大群想了许多办法训练它，可雪驹野性难改，对郑大群非踢即咬，有一次竟将郑大群在地上拖得遍体伤痕，但郑大群并不气馁，依然耐心地精心调教着雪驹。经过一段时间的训练，雪驹第一次来到拍摄现场，扮演萧何的郝炜神气十足地跃上马背，想炫耀一下马上明星的威风，不料被雪驹掀于马下，摔了个结实。多亏郑大群及时抓住了笼头，才使马平静下来。再一次实拍，因雪驹对灯光、反光板等现场环境不适应，再次将郝炜掀下了马，使郝炜恼羞成怒，趁郑大群不在，把雪驹拴在树上狠狠抽打了一顿。众人也议论纷纷，认为选择此马是错误的。雪驹挣断缰绳，带着条条鞭痕逃回马厩，郑大群十分心疼。在会议上，郝炜极力贬低雪驹，导演黄默只好做出卖掉此马另选新马的决定。刘若增硬从郑大群手中牵走雪驹卖给了做豆腐的个体户。但不久，雪驹挣脱绳索又跑回了摄制组营地。郑大群一度为失去雪驹而闷闷不快。他在回部队的途中突然发现奔跑的雪驹，欣喜若狂，翻身上马回到营地。为了这匹马，郑大群甘愿做郝炜的替身，代郝炜拍骑马的戏。郑大群诚挚之情深深感动了大家，他终于成功地代郝伟拍摄了萧何骑马的几场戏。影片拍完了，郑大群陪着雪驹回到了制片厂。郑大群要返回部队了，与雪驹依依难舍。萧何马上戏的成功是郑大群和雪驹的功劳，但获得荣誉的却是郝炜。
