《大师的背影》由著名导演米家山执导，历时五载，采访近百人，录制近300小时素材得以铸就的诚意之作。纪录片以建国后继任“荣宝斋”经理的侯恺老先生（采访时92岁，已故）的回忆为引线，围绕新中国成立后荣宝斋的开拓、进取、发展和中国传统 国画艺术步入历史辉煌的背景，借助大量国画大师们生前的珍贵口述影像资料及齐白石、徐悲鸿、李苦禅、李可染、黄胄、张 仃、董寿平、蒋兆和、李斛、许麟庐等数十位老一代国画大师们的遗孀、后人和弟子生动真实的讲述，勾画出中国一代传统国 画大师们作品背后那些鲜为人知的、与作品等高的人品、艺德、学养以及他们的人生冷暖、交情世故、逸闻趣事，把创作天价作品、高居艺术殿堂之巅的大师们还原成一个个生动鲜活的普通人。
