    Four centuries before the beginning of our era, Aristofanes wrote the comedy Ornithes . In it, two men leave their birthplace in search of a better life. They arrive in the forest of the birds and meet Hoopoe, the man who has become a bird.   This Greek comedy is a reverie, a voyage of discovery, an essay and perhaps also an indictment. The film mixes talking heads with theater, street scenes and beautiful views. The foundation is a desire for freedom but also the obstacles that humanity imposes on itself to find that freedom; walls around a country, social conventions, rules. Children rock to feel the tingling in their belly, that evolutionary reminder of what it was like to whiz through the air.   You can go in all directions in the air, says the man who no longer wants to walk but flies. "Gravity is mortality," says another. Meanwhile, two men go looking for bird man Hoopoe.   _____________________   A hybrid film, at the edge of documentary, fiction, and political fantasy, by cinematographer Babis Makridis, of “L” (Sundance Film Festival 2012) and “Pity” (Sundance Film Festival 2018, Best Film, Greek Film Academy 2019).   The film “The Birds or how to be one” draws its inspiration from the archetypical myth of Aristophanes’s “The Birds,” Nikos Karathanos’s production, and its participants, filming them off stage, in real spaces and natural environments—from lava fields in Iceland to the plateaus of Patagonia, and from Times Square to the Egyptian pyramids. Everything takes place in a universe of fluid “everyday” routine, among theater PEOPLE, ornithologists, and pragmatic recluses who all dream of flying.   The film will have its world premiere at the Voices section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2020. The section presents "movies driven by powerful stories, captivating subjects and important themes. Each film brings a distinctive view of the world, from filmmakers with a confident voice". The movie was also part of Work in Progress by Les Arc Festival 2019, while in January 2020 it will be presented at Santiago a Mil Festival in Chile, together with the updated edition of "The Birds" performance by Nikos Karathanos.

    The Good Woman of the story is Aoi. In Thai, her name means 'sugar cane' or 'sweet' - not her real name but the one she uses. She works as a prostitute, catering to the male tourists who crowd the girlie bars of Patpong.      "They stayed at a seedy hotel in the red-light district. Much of the filming and video recording took place there, and in the months that followed he fell in love with her."      "He paid and was her customer. She became the subject of his film."      Starting from this worst-possible condition, Aoi's life is described and their relationship is recorded: its evolution from fake sexual intimacy to collusion in the process of making the film and, finally, to difficult friendship and a kind of love.      Note by the filmmaker      "Like the Brecht play which inspired the title, this film is an ironic parable about the impossibility of living a good life in an imperfect world. It is also an attempt to describe in this form, and to conflate, what is so banal about sex with a measure of what is profound. It is a film about prositution as a metaphor for capitalism, here played out across the borders of race and culture, and about prostitution as a metaphor for all relations between women and men.      It is also about voyeuristic tendencies which are inherent in all film making and film viewing. It is my hope that, as with Brecht, we are confronted with a vision of ourselves, thus forcing the consideration of how personal sexuality affects political and philosophical beliefs. In this film I have exposed myself in order to force the audience to reconsider the whole nature of documentary film practice. Under the thrall of our separate desires, we are all implicated in some way."

Here, the filmmakers interview leading researchers and experts on the topic, and also shadow members of the super class, including the German real estate mogul, Christoph Gröner, who believes that, “Entrepreneurs are more powerful than politicians, because we’re more independent.” This film takes a close look at the lives and mentality of the ultra rich, and evaluates their own narrow worldview, as well as how they view themselves as fit to rule over the rest of the population.
