片子讲述的是美国60年代人的成长故事，从描写这些人的人生经历，将美国60年代真实地展现在我们面前。本剧严肃而又不失活泼，讲述一些国内问题的同时，也有一些生活的小乐趣；真实而又亲切，叙述的都是平凡人的经历，让人像触碰泥土一般，感受到他们的生活和情感。 　　剧中有一条政治主线，是以时代为背景，用时代中的标志性事件串联而成的，这其中有“马丁·路德·金的解放运动”，“jfk总统被刺”，“jfk弟弟rfk遇刺”，“越战”等等。而主人公中三个孩子，一个参加了越南战争，一个反对越南战争，一个成了“young mother”。加入越南战争的孩子从之前的意气风发到后来的颓废反映了越南战争给人们的精神带来了摧残，尽管他的肉体尚且没有受到炮火的洗礼；而弟弟在政治主见上反对越南战争，在生活感情上的迷茫，后来终于明白了真正的爱情，也收获了幸福；妹妹由于年轻漂亮，被各种欲望所吸引，怀孕后又不堪老夫的冷眼，离家出走数十年，饱受生活的痛苦和感情上的创伤，最终回到了家里。整个故事以一个美好的结局收尾，一家人聚到了一块，欢快的玩着橄榄球，什么是美国是家庭，我想这部片子给我们很翔实的解释，美国是家庭不像我们想的那样，冷漠无情，应该说，他是在尊重个人的情感的基础上建立的有着血缘联系的单元。而我们中国式家庭，用“君为臣纲，夫为妻纲，妇为子纲”来形容再正确不过了，相似的还有日本和韩国的家庭

In the summer of 1967, thousands of young people from across the country flocked to San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district to join in the hippie experience, only to discover that what they had come for was already disappearing. By 1968 the celebration of free love and music had descended into a maelstrom of drug abuse, broken dreams, and violence. American Experience offers a complex portrait of the peak of the 1960s counter-culture movement.

Bill, a wealthy businessman, confronts his junkie daughter's drug-dealing boyfriend; in the ensuing argument, Bill kills him. Panic-stricken, he wanders the streets and eventually stops at a bar. There he runs into a drunken factory worker named Joe, who hates hippies, blacks, and anyone who is "different", and would like to kill one himself. The two start talking, and Bill reveals his secret to Joe. Complications ensue.

1980: 19 year old Robert, fed up with Hippy phoniness and bourgeoise narrow mindedness alike, flees the German provinces for West Berlin. A tour de force through the glorious dirt of West Berlin ensues. Full of sex, drugs, love and PUNK.
