和女儿同住，过着淳朴生活的73岁老人史崔特身体状况不佳、没有驾照却又个性执拗。他与大自己两岁的哥哥在多年前有摩擦后就不再往来，突然间他听闻到哥哥病危的消息，几番思量后他决定去探望这个阔别多年的亲人，见最后一面。然而没有代步的车辆，两地又相隔300英里路，他灵机一动，一个人驾着他那台1966年份的老式割草机，由爱俄华州他居住的小镇，驶到威斯康辛他哥哥的住处，摇摇晃晃走过300哩的路程。就跟许许多多的公路电影一样，一路上我们见到史崔特先生遇见许多人……

这是一部改编自真人真事的公路电影，导演林奇一改其诡异的风格，以极为朴实内敛的手法，说一个简单动人的小故事，正如同英文片名的双关弦外之音一般。就在这一段交织着追忆与悔恨的漫长旅程中，老人最后必然将成功地进入每个观众的心底，让人们在他的情绪里搜寻自己记忆中与他重合之处。老牌演员理查德德 法恩斯沃思饰演片中主角史崔特先生，演出令人动容。他曾经演过《万夫莫敌》、《跃马山庄》等经典名片，接演本片后，还因此被提名角逐奥斯卡金像奖最佳男演员奖项，不过，他却在2000年10月因为久病厌世，而举枪自尽身亡，本片也成为他在影坛的告别遗作。

·电影根据真实故事改编。真正的艾尔文·史崔特(1920年—1996年)，在他的旅行结束后还活了三年。
