很多人觉得乡土文学题材的电影，大多是女人的苦命戏，如果看了这部电影，可以说这是我看过最悲惨的剧情片，没有之一。王泽明（江明饰）是个残疾人，没有经济来源，家里有三个孩子要上学，王的妻子梅竹（胡慧中饰）决定到都市挣钱去。可后来梅杳无音信，邻里都说梅跟人跑了，王于是开始仇恨他的妻子。儿子永生因为没钱交资料费，怕同学嘲笑，便逃学跟小混混一块。没想到导演竟然给到永生吸烟的镜头，让人看的触目惊心。小女儿小娟被父亲卖掉，让大女儿小珍骨肉分离，哭的惨绝人寰。父亲觉得自己不是人便投江自杀。梅终于现身，自己消失的这十个月全在监狱度过。原来梅在做服务员的时候出于防卫用花瓶打死了强暴他的嫖客（马沙饰）而入狱。梅为了救永生被小混混差点一榔头砸死，幸好最后是救了回来，最终孩子也跟妈妈相认。
