A scientist is stabbed in the back with a Samurai sword. He is found in a locked room. Creek is called in to solve the problem。

A judge on a police protection programme is killed by a rapier blade to the heart after a brief struggle, but only his wife, who insists she's innocent, was in the room at the time, and the only evidence at the crime scene is a torn fingernail. As Jonathan investigates the murder, Maddy and a new friend are investigating the derelict Mother Redcap Inn, where seven men apparently died of fright after looking out of a window in the same room. A connection between the cases is drawn when Maddy discovers the body of a vagrant woman... missing a fingernail.

In 1889 Dr Thaddeus Northcote fell victim to a curse by his spurned mistress, Egyptian Selima Al-Sharad, and died in the garden of his house, Green Lanterns,in mysterious circumstances that were never explained. A hundred years later Emily Somerton and her friend have a traumatic experience in the country and twenty years later Emily is plucked from working in a shoe shop by charismatic crime writer Hugo Dore, who just happens to be the current owner of Green Lanterns. Emily feels she is being taken over by Selima when death threats arrive, in her hand-writing, for Hugo's icy wife Harriet. When Harriet is murdered she identifies Emily as her killer before dying and Emily is arrested. Despite Jonathan explaining at her trial how Northcote was killed and how Emily was framed she is still found guilty. Jonathan and Emily's friend Joey, new assistant to Jonathan's boss Adam, discover that Emily is guilty - of a fatality from twenty years previously,and the real killer is exacting a personal revenge on her.

A respected police officer is photographed in suspicious circumstances. Can Jonathan prove his innocence?

Maddy is contacted by a man who makes a living investigating the existence of aliens and who claims to have found a real alien skeleton. The US Air Force intervenes and takes the skeleton, but it vanishes on the way to the military base, leaving Jonathan to try to find out where it went without leading the military to Maddy.

When an actress is murdered on the set of her latest movie, Jonathan is called upon to explain how the killer managed to fire a gun through a plate glass window without breaking it. The funeral, held at the ancient Doomdorf Castle in Scotland presents more mysteries and Jonathan, without Maddy, has only a pushy showbiz agent to trust.

After a well known horror writer is shot dead one night at her son-in-law's house, her killer simply disappeared. As Jonathan is somewhat uninterested in the case, Maddy investigates for herself.

Antonia, a friend of Maddy's asks her and Jonathan to discover what her husband, Norman, has been up to after reliable independent witnesses place him on both sides of the Atlantic only minutes apart. Jonathan, meanwhile, has to deal with a rather awkward romantic encounter with a bald female tax inspector.

As Creek and Polly strive to settle into rural life, they find their apparently serene country village is riddled with all manner of strange and disturbing undercurrents... 　　Trouble is already brewing in the nearby community centre - recently reopened after a major face-lift - where a sordid sex scandal is about to break, casting a pall of gloom over the celebrations. 　　And at the vicarage, the arrival of a new baby is overshadowed by tales of a “weird hump-backed beast”, that has been seen prowling in the garden by night and foraging through the rubbish bags for foodstuffs. 　　Even the Creek residence is struck by misfortune, as the prospect of a plague of deadly Japanese Knotweed threatens to trigger wide-scale panic throughout the village. And after a whole slew of other unfortunate events, there are fears that some strange parochial Apocalypse is about to dawn. 　　Jonathan Creek, meanwhile, finds himself paying a charitable call on the eccentric Mr Eric Ipswich - aka 'The Amazing Astrodamus' - an ancient and reclusive former psychic magician who will shortly bring the village to a standstill by pulling off the most baffling act of clairvoyance in history. 　　And what is behind the macabre recurring dream that continues to haunt Creek's wife Polly... in which the kindly children's nursery character The Sandman is transformed into a dark and chilling figure of evil?

The set-up is told through a grainy, black and white reel film: During a balmy summer in the 1940/30's, renowned psychic and medium Jacques Futrelle holds a dinner party at his 'haunted' mansion, Metropolis. As well as his own wife and child, guests include the who's who in modern politics and media, including genetecist and scientist Eli Mencken. Futrelle tells the tale of a mysterious room, the highest room in the house, where an insane Edwardian relative confined himself. The 'Nightmare Room' is said to be haunted. Mencken, naturally, takes this on the chin and stays sceptical. Futrelle suggests he stay the night in the room, if he really doesnt believe in ghosts. Egged on by other guests, Mencken gives in, all in good humour. The windows are all locked, there are no trapdoors, just a bed, a small bathroom, and the main door. Four guests lock four padlocks on the outside, so he cannot leave without all fours co-operation. At dawn, thy unlock the door...and Mencken has vanished! Leaving nothing but a sticky ectoplasmic substance n the bed... The mystery being he has never reappeared.
