1927年蒋介石公然背叛革命，大肆屠杀中国共产党人，中华大地一片腥风血雨，革命处于危急关头。毛泽东决定组织平江、浏阳的武装暴动与中央配合作战，为此特派共产党员夏明翰到长沙一带进行活动。夏明翰早已做好为革命牺牲的准备，告别妻子后，他来到平江浏阳一带，奔走城乡组织暴动。反动派惨遭挫败后到处悬赏捉拿他。后来革命党军警特务利用叛徒宋若琳终于将夏明翰逮捕。敌人用尽了威逼利诱，严刑拷打种种伎俩，夏明翰始终坚贞不屈。反动派无计可施将他杀害。
