青年农民卜奇与邢珍新婚未久，感情甚笃。某日，富家公子金子昌来到乡下，在讨水喝时见到邢珍，惊为天人，花言巧语引诱她与自己一起离家而去。卜奇四处寻妻不得，来到城里，把盘缠花光也没找到妻子，生活无着，沦落为贼党。邢珍与金子昌同居数月后生了一个男孩，金子昌由于这个孩子非己所出，要扔掉，邢珍不同意，金子昌半夜把孩子偷带出去扔到路边，匪人吴惠劫取金子昌所戴钻戒后将其杀害。卜奇行窃被警探追踪，慌不择路跑到这里，见到弃儿和金子昌的尸体，十分害怕，他将弃儿抱走托给一个陆姓老妇，这时警探追踪而至，以莫须有罪名将他捉走判了六年监禁。卜奇出狱后找到陆姓老妇家，见她正在打骂一个小男孩，他没认出这就是自己当年寄养的孩子，上前劝解，不想老妇竟认出了他，向他索要六年的抚养费，卜奇没钱，抱起孩子就跑，仍然回到贼窟。这时吴惠为了谋图金家的财产，进金家当了汽车夫。为了让弃儿将来做内应，他把弃儿带去见女主人慧珠，哄骗她收容了弃儿。而邢珍自金子昌死后生活无依，也辗转到金家做了佣人，待得知慧珠就是金子昌之妹后，更不敢让人知道自己的来历。弃儿感念慧珠厚待，不愿为贼人做内应。吴惠命卜奇去金府行窃，被慧珠的表兄陈生发现，卜奇逃到楼上遇到弃儿，他逼问弃儿财物藏在何处，弃儿不说，卜奇自己翻箱倒柜，邢珍听见动静赶来，夫妻相见十分惊骇。慧珠亦赶来，得知二人是夫妻后，放卜奇跳窗逃走。陈生素爱慧珠，但调笑时遭慧珠拒绝，今见她忽然放一外来男子逃走，醋火中烧，到慧珠叔父处进谗言，叔父怀疑慧珠不贞而怒斥她，慧珠蒙冤愤而出走，到山中尼庵去找出家为尼的姑母，深夜迷路跌落到山下昏了过去。恰巧卜奇路过将她救到吴惠藏匿赃物的小屋。吴惠见到慧珠，要将她作为人质勒索金家，卜奇不允，二人斗殴，不料引起大火，幸得弃儿赶来，用木棍击倒吴惠，救出卜奇，当他再次冲进屋救慧珠时，被烟熏倒，卜奇冲进屋将弃儿和慧珠救出，吴惠葬身火窟。慧珠归家，辩白冤屈。卜奇和邢珍各道自己的遭遇，得知邢珍失子与卜奇得儿为同时，弃儿就是他们夫妻的儿子。全家喜相聚的时刻，他们感念是慧珠的善良使他们得以团圆。

As a baby, Millie was washed up onto the beach of a fishing village and taken in by Hy Jessop. Jessop has abused her all her life, forcing her to work as a drudge and beating her often. Her only protector is Sem, a half-witted hunchback. After being beaten one too many times, Millie runs away and hides in a mansion that's supposed to be haunted. The next day, author Ronald Roberts arrives in search of some peace and quiet so he can complete his novel. He moves into the mansion and Millie plays ghost until he discovers her. The two of them fall in love, but Roberts is already engaged to Beatrice, who shows up in the village with a group of his friends.
