Ken Russell's Most Unusual Film 　　It is hard to believe that Ken Russell was able to get this one "green-lighted" for release by a major American distributer as it is quite simply one of the strangest films to ever grace a screen! Russell, ever the visionary, takes the not so off-target view that Franz Liszt the pop star of his day and then offers viewers a comic book version of the composer's life and relationship with several infamous women and, most importantly, Richard Wagner. This film must be seen to be believed! And is a definite must-see for all Russell fans. It will also be appreciated by Roger Daltrey fans as this one captures Daltrey in his prime! Interesting musical work by Rick Wakeman and great set designs. It would be so cool to see this on DVD with director commentary! ...Maybe some day.

Liszt's brilliant piano playing impressed the Russian royalty and aristocracy. Even the Russian Tsar had to stop talking when Liszt was playing his piano. Liszt became friends with the Russian composer Glinka. Liszt's beautiful music touched everyone's heart. Women pursued him and his lengthy affair with countess Marie D'Agoult was in trouble. In Russia Liszt met the beautiful princess Carolyne, who soon left her husband for Liszt . She became his last love, and he composed the "Dream of Love", dedicated to her. But the Chirch did not allow Liszt to marry princess Caroline, because she could not terminate her first marriage. Being loved by the public, Liszt was never really happy in his personal life, and he expressed himself making beautiful music.

First broadcast on the UK’s Channel 4 in March 1988 this was episode 10 (of 11) of the series The Modern World, Ten Great Writers. 　　It mixes documentary and interview with a part dramatisation of The Trial starring the still relatively unknown Tim Roth (he is fourth in the credits listing on Amazon). The voiceover is by the ever so serious but still rather good Melvyn Bragg and there are comments from the even more serious George Steiner who at one point makes the salient comment that Kafka is the only writer (or person?) ever to be identified by just an initial. 　　The picture quality is not great but given the nature of the piece and its rarity that is not a great drawback.
