本作品讲述了因某件事而无法雕刻佛像的佛师灵魂得到救赎的故事。故事的主角是一对移居到自然资源丰富的飞騨村落的年轻夫妇——佛师直哉和他的妻子阳真理。两人在新的土地上开始了生活，但直哉不会雕刻佛像，另一方面阳真理心中也有疙瘩。一开始是小心翼翼地观察他们的村落居民，但随着夫妇俩与邻居吾郎及其孙女希希夏的关系加深，渐渐接受了两人。不久，围绕着村落佛堂里被烧毁的观音像，人们所背负的罪孽和后悔之情逐渐明朗。
