大映創立18年を記念して、1958に作られた時代劇。渡辺邦男、八尋不二、民門敏雄、松村正温と4人で共同執筆した脚本を、『アンコール・ワット物語 美しき哀愁』の渡辺邦男が監督、渡辺孝が撮影をそれぞれ担当した。元禄14年3月、江戸城松の廊下で、浅野内匠頭は度重なる侮辱にたえかね、勅使接待役指南の吉良上野介へ刃傷に及んだ。幕府では、上野介派の老中柳沢出羽守が目付役多門や老中士屋らの反対を押しきり、上野介は咎めなし、内匠頭は右京太夫邸で即日切腹という処分を裁決した。赤穂で悲報を受けた内蔵助は、家中の意見を篭城から殉死へ導き、その後始めて仇討の意図を打ち明けた。内蔵助は、順序として浅野家再興の嘆願書を脇坂淡路守に託したが、出羽守はこれも受けつけない。上野介の実子上杉綱憲は、家老・千坂に上野介の警戒にあたらせ、各方面に間者を放った・・・。
