1965年3月，周恩来总理主持召开中央专委会议，决定研制东风5号远程运载火箭。 1980年5月18日，中国酒泉卫星发射中心成功发射了我国第一枚远程运载火箭东风五号，有效遏制了西方大国对我国的核威慑，成为维护我国国家安全的“杀手锏”武器。 2020年，是中国第一枚远程运载火箭全程飞行试验成功40周年，我们的太空创新实践中心、中国酒泉卫星发射中心东风电视台制作了10集纪录片《为国铸剑》，纪念这一伟大壮举。
