1996年夏，大学毕业已三年的同窗袁浩东（刘烨饰）、郭洋港（沙溢饰）、赵家乐（李光洁饰）各自经历着不同的生活。终于，三人带着梦想重回北京，相聚一起创业。然而涉世未深的三人很快碰壁，心灰意冷的浩东欲与大学女友林紫云（赵子琪饰）分手。1998年夏，在赵父赵振庭（樊志起饰）的帮助下，三人重新振作接手杂志社。 然而物欲横流的社会现状却让三人心生芥蒂，矛盾不断。一场竞标，让心力交瘁的赵父心梗去世。家乐认定浩东不仅是告密者还是杀人凶手，林紫云也离他而去。心中充满仇恨的家乐决定与浩东展开一场面对面的较量。为了报复浩东，家乐害得无辜的洋港一家家破人亡。家乐自首，浩东也终于放下一切。2007年初冬，两鬓斑白的浩东在三人当年居住过的四合院里，面对被提前释放的家乐，终于道出我就是出卖者。
