主要情节取自莫泊桑的著名短篇小说《羊脂球》。19世纪末，美国西部蛮荒边区，车夫巴克驾车来到当途镇换马，准备前往罗特斯堡，八个不同的人物共同乘一轮马车，由于其中一名是妓女达拉斯，颇引起其他乘客的议论。乘越狱的牛仔灵果也准备搭车到罗特斯堡，去找杀害了他父母和弟弟又陷他入狱的伯鲁姆三兄弟报仇。但当他登上这辆各种人混杂的驿站马车后，人生观发生了变化……
