早年留学日本的法律学者童霜威，当战火燃向南京的时候，相依为命的弟弟童军威为抗击日军而英勇战死，亲朋好友相继在日寇的大屠杀中饮恨黄泉，国仇家恨，使童霜威下定抗战到底民主建国的决心。童霜威的前妻柳苇，因双方政见不一致离异。柳苇在紧张的斗争中，仍然关注着童霜威并多次引导他走向抗日统一战线，同时亦注重儿子童家霆的健康成长，对此童霜威不以为然。童霜威父子在往后的颠簸岁月里与国民党伪政权和日本鬼子展开了一幕又一幕惊心动魄、斗智斗勇的反特抗日斗争。

以国民党上层官员、法学权威童霜威及其儿子童家霆的家庭变故和人生遭际为主线，展现了抗日战争时期南半个中国的全景画卷。童霜威战前曾因官场失意而牢骚满腹，自命清高又难免随波逐流，但在抗日还是投敌的关键时刻，却以他骨子里的民族气节，拒绝了各方势力卑劣的笼络与威逼。八年烽烟中，他携子童家霆避难南陵、宦游武汉，亡命香港、隐居上海、辗转重庆，见识了各阶层人士的生活百态。他由消极避难、保持名节到鄙弃国民党独裁统治、投入民主运动的行列。同时，成长为青年的童家霆，也在时代风云的锻造下义无反顾地投身光明。
